As commercial space expands beyond Earth orbit, every mission shares a common constraint. Spacecraft can only travel as far as their fuel allows.

Whether supporting satellite constellations, transporting cargo, or exploring the solar system, today’s propulsion systems depend on carrying propellant. Every kilogram of fuel adds launch mass, increases cost, and ultimately limits how long a spacecraft can operate before its mission comes to an end.

For Astrum Drive, solving that challenge became the company’s mission.

Asking a Different Question

When founder and CEO Dr. Ivaylo Vasilev and co-founder Prof. Dr. Nelson Bolivar set out to build a space company, they did not begin by asking what technology to develop. Instead, they asked a much broader question:

What is the biggest problem preventing humanity from expanding into space?

The answer was simple.

Fuel.

“We put satellites in orbit and they die after several years because we don’t have enough fuel,” Vasilev explained. “Fuel is the biggest enemy of space exploration.”

That realization inspired Astrum Drive to investigate an entirely different approach to propulsion. Instead of finding ways to carry more propellant, the company began exploring whether electrical energy could be converted directly into thrust without continuously expelling traditional fuel.

It is a bold idea, but one rooted in a practical goal: helping spacecraft travel farther, operate longer, and carry more of what matters.

Expanding What’s Possible

Astrum Drive has reached several important milestones as it advances toward commercialization. The company has successfully completed third-party laboratory and field validation, secured multiple issued and pending patents, and was invited to present its technology at NASA. It has also received multiple Letters of Intent from satellite providers and is now raising funds for an orbital demonstration mission, the final major step before commercial deployment. Dr. Vasilev and Prof. Dr. Bolivar continue refining the technology while preparing to demonstrate its capabilities in space.

Even modest amounts of thrust can create meaningful value in space.

Applications such as orbit maintenance, station keeping, and long-duration maneuvering often require efficiency more than raw power. If future propulsion systems can perform those tasks while reducing or eliminating the need for traditional propellant, spacecraft designers could rethink everything from satellite architecture to mission duration.

The concept also aligns with another growing industry priority: improving efficiency while reducing spacecraft mass and simplifying mission logistics.

A Future Worth Exploring

History shows that many of today’s standard technologies began as unconventional ideas. Reusable rockets, commercial space stations, and satellite servicing all started as ambitious concepts before becoming part of the industry’s roadmap.

Astrum Drive represents another example of that spirit of exploration.

Innovation has always required people willing to pursue difficult problems, even when the path forward is uncertain. Astrum Drive has spent years advancing its concept from an ambitious idea to a technology that has passed third-party validations, secured intellectual property, industry interest, and recognition from the broader space community.

The next milestone is an orbital demonstration that will show how the technology performs in space. If successful, it could open new possibilities for spacecraft that travel farther, operate longer, and rethink one of spaceflight’s oldest assumptions.

Commercial space continues to grow because innovators keep asking bigger questions.
