Why Methane and Liquid Oxygen?
Intuitive Machines selected liquid methane and liquid oxygen because the combination supports both today’s lunar missions and tomorrow’s exploration goals. Benefits include:
Higher density than liquid hydrogen: Smaller tanks can store the same amount of propellant, reducing vehicle volume.
Warmer cryogenic temperatures: Easier long-term storage and handling than liquid hydrogen.
Reduced boil-off: Less propellant loss during extended missions and surface operations.
Cleaner combustion: Produces fewer engine deposits, improving reliability and supporting reuse.
Built for the future: Methane can potentially be produced on Mars from carbon dioxide and water using the Sabatier process, supporting future in-situ resource utilization.
