The first lunar missions proved we could reach the Moon. The next challenge is learning how to stay there.
That transition depends on more than generating electricity. It requires delivering power where it is needed, storing it through the two-week lunar night, and distributing it across an expanding network of landers, rovers, habitats, and scientific instruments.

On Earth, we rarely think about the electrical grid. We simply expect power to be available when we flip a switch. Astrobotic believes the Moon will eventually require a similar approach, replacing isolated power systems with an integrated energy network that supports continuous operations.

Beyond Power Generation

For decades, lunar power discussions focused primarily on generating electricity. Solar arrays, batteries, radioisotope power systems, and future fission reactors all address an important part of the challenge.

Astrobotic sees a much larger opportunity.

The company’s LunaGrid architecture extends beyond generation to include power distribution, energy storage, mobile charging, standardized interfaces, and eventually the integration of multiple energy sources into a unified surface network. Rather than viewing each technology as a separate solution, LunaGrid connects them into a system designed to grow alongside lunar activity.

As new missions arrive, the grid can expand, allowing additional users to connect without building entirely new infrastructure.

Connecting the Lunar Economy

Power only creates value when it reaches the people and equipment that need it.

Future lunar operations may include scientific stations separated by kilometers, autonomous mining equipment operating in permanently shadowed regions, mobile robots exploring new terrain, and commercial facilities manufacturing products on the Moon. Each will have different energy demands and operating schedules.

Astrobotic envisions a flexible network capable of routing electricity where it is needed while supporting mobile charging stations, wireless power transfer, and standardized connections that simplify how future systems work together.

That approach reduces duplication, improves reliability, and lowers the cost of expanding operations. Instead of every mission solving the same power challenges independently, new customers can build upon infrastructure already in place.

Building for Tomorrow

LunaGrid is designed to evolve.

Early systems may rely primarily on solar energy supported by batteries and regenerative fuel cells. As energy demands increase, larger power sources, including future fission surface power systems, can become additional contributors to the same network. The objective is not to replace one technology with another but to create an energy architecture where each source contributes according to its strengths.

That philosophy reflects a broader shift taking place across the commercial space industry. Success will depend less on individual hardware and more on how technologies work together to support sustained operations.
