Sampling Mars:

How Rovers Are Leading the Way

We need to understand what’s beneath the Martian surface, and that job has fallen to the rovers.

NASA’s Perseverance and Curiosity rovers have been critical in gathering geological data and testing early resource extraction techniques.

Perseverance is equipped with a rotary-percussive drill capable of collecting core samples from rocks and regolith. It seals these samples in titanium tubes that are being stored for a future return mission. These samples will help scientists identify mineral composition, search for signs of past water activity, and assess useful resources.

Meanwhile, Curiosity has been analyzing rock powder and soil using onboard instruments like SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) and CheMin (Chemistry and Mineralogy) to identify chemical signatures and mineralogy.

These missions do more than inform science, they lay the groundwork for future mining for future development by helping us locate:

  • Water ice deposits
  • Concentrations of iron and sulfur
  • Clays, salts, and perchlorates
  • Habitable environments from Mars’ past

China’s Tianwen-1 / Zhurong rover was sent to study Martian soil, climate, magnetic field, and surface composition. It also searched for signs of water-ice in its year-long mission.

The United Kingdom and Russia also sent rovers to Mars but was not successful establishing communications on the dusty planet.

Future rovers will take it further, combining sampling with in-situ testing, real-time analysis, and even basic processing to bridge the gap between exploration and extraction.
