THE MISSING LINK
Turning Power into Mission Capability
Based on an interview with

Generating electricity is only the beginning.
Solar arrays capture sunlight. Batteries store energy. Nuclear reactors provide continuous power. Emerging technologies like power beaming promise to deliver electricity across space. Each represents an important step toward a permanent space economy.
Yet every spacecraft faces another challenge before any of that energy can accomplish useful work.
Power must be transformed into the precise voltage, current, and stability required by propulsion systems, communications equipment, sensors, directed-energy payloads, and onboard computing. Until that happens, electricity remains potential rather than capability.
The Missing Link
CisLunar Industries provides that valuable connection between power generation and mission execution.
The company’s power processing technology accepts electricity from solar arrays, batteries, or future nuclear systems and converts it into the form required by spacecraft subsystems. Hall-effect thrusters, high-power sensors, communications equipment, and future orbital data centers all rely on stable, carefully managed electrical power before they can perform their intended mission.
The technology mirrors the electrical infrastructure people rely on every day. Electrical substations and transformers convert and distribute power at the voltages required by homes, businesses, and industry. Spacecraft require a similar capability. Every onboard system has unique electrical requirements, making power processing the critical bridge between power generation and mission capability.
Building the Electrical Infrastructure of Space
As spacecraft become more capable, electrical systems are becoming more sophisticated.
Future satellites will support higher-power electric propulsion, advanced communications, directed-energy applications, autonomous operations, and increasingly capable onboard processing. Those systems benefit from higher-voltage architectures that reduce transmission losses, decrease cable mass, and improve overall efficiency, much like terrestrial electrical grids transmit power at high voltages before stepping it down where it is needed.
Power processing makes those architectures practical. Rather than treating electricity as a fixed spacecraft resource, engineers can optimize how energy flows throughout the vehicle, allowing each subsystem to receive exactly what it requires.
The result is more than efficient power management. It is greater mission capability.
Building the Foundation for Scale
The commercial space economy depends on far more than individual technologies.
CisLunar Industries was founded to advance the industrialization of the Earth-Moon system. As the team evaluated future industries such as in-space manufacturing, lunar resource utilization, and large-scale orbital infrastructure, one requirement consistently emerged: reliable access to power at meaningful scale.
Terrestrial manufacturing provides an important lesson. Modern products become affordable through standardized processes, high-volume production, and mature industrial infrastructure. Commercial space is following a similar path, moving beyond individually crafted spacecraft toward scalable manufacturing methods that can support an expanding market.
As launch cadence increases and power demands continue to grow, generating electricity will remain essential. Turning that electricity into mission capability will be equally important.
Power generation begins the journey. Power processing makes it useful.
